2017 1924 Double Black Limited Edition Gnarley Head

I admit, I am a fan of Lodi, California wine.

I also admit that I am more than a little fascinated with the choices wine makers exercise to get shelf space and sales. Some bottles are feminine. They display pastel colors with soft fonts that are often cursive. They seduce the female buyer into making a pretty decision.

This bottle of 1924 was the exact opposite. Only a man or a woman who is fashionably Goth would pick it up. A matte finish black bottle with black foil cap and a black label

make the grey and silver writing stand out. The only other color was a line of blood red that says Red Wine Blend. What was blended was not mentioned on the label.

By the way, 1924 is a reference to the year of Prohibition when wine making was illegal in Lodi, California.

Pull the real cork and pour a wine with a nice deep red color

but barely any nose or legs. More acid than I expected ambushed me

with a nice tang that was a pleasant surprise at the first sip, but not as pleasant at the bottom of the glass. Tannins were AWOL.

The taste was bold, raspberry with a caramel finish. The label said Limited Edition. I am guessing that is more marketing. No number of bottles was mentioned and the price was under $15. We will never know exactly what was limited. I'll skip snarky guesses.

It was amusing. It didn't cost much. I don't want another bottle.
